The Future of Packaging 2024

The key to sustained success for any brand is its ability to constantly improve, progress, and evolve according to the needs and wants of consumers. And while products and formulas are commonly the primary focus of these efforts, we can’t forget about the importance of packaging. More often than not, packaging is the first contact a customer will have with a brand, so it’s imperative to keep in mind what we know about first impressions and give packaging the attention it deserves.

Achieving this means doing away with any and all packaging components that aren’t completely necessary — something that frequently leads to serious reductions in waste. More efficient packaging is a win for both brands and consumers; brands win by cutting down on shipping weights and volumes and consumers feel better about spending their money with brands that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness. Carbon Black - Bio-Based AlternativesAs the demand for more environmentally conscious products and practices continues to trend, so too will the move away from carbon black in the packaging sector. Developments in recycled and bio-based alternatives such as algae- and biochar-derived inks are on the up and have been steadily gaining ground on the probably carcinogenic coloring agent. These new alternatives are attractive not only because they’re cleaner to produce, but also because they recycle and compost much better post-use than traditional carbon black. Working these eco-friendly advancements into your brand’s sustainability narrative lets consumers know that your dedication to the cause is more than just a tagline.

Less Packaging, Less Impact Previously we mentioned how reducing excess packaging was a win-win for both brands and consumers, but in 2024 this issue goes well beyond simply cutting out the unnecessary. Packaging manufacturers and brands will take a serious medley of measures this year to further minimize carbon emissions and their impact on the environment. Things like organic and fiber-based materials, manufacturing plants powered by clean energy, bio-polymers, and moving toward water- and plastic-free formulas are all on the table for getting this done. Taking a multi-faceted approach to tackling environmental concerns is hands down the best way to get your brand into climate positive territory.

Metallic Luxe - Over the Top Opulence Though it might seem counterintuitive to go from talking about reducing environmental impacts one second and  metallic packaging the next, the two aren’t necessarily incompatible. Recent advances in decoration processes have made it possible to achieve the same elegant metallized effect without the solvent-based baggage. Take advantage of these novelty materials and techniques to add glittery, mirrored, and holographic touches to your packaging that create an increase in perceived value and opulence all while remaining eco-friendly.

Naked Packaging - Unprocessed Aesthetics If eco-metallization and opulence aren’t your brand’s thing, perhaps the trend toward naked packaging is a better fit. Naked packaging sits at the other end of the spectrum and leverages natural, unprocessed, and visibly recycled materials to connect with environmentally conscious consumers. Devoid of inks, dyes, colors, and coatings, this type of packaging not only embraces the imperfections of recycled materials, it allows them to take center stage. The organic and sometimes rough aesthetics of naked packaging means that each piece is truly unique and at the same time makes an unequivocal statement as to your brand’s commitment to sustainability.

It’s plain to see that packaging in general is moving in an increasingly eco-friendly direction, fortunately the ways to accomplish this are plentiful and leave plenty of opportunities for brands to explore.
